Quick facts about Macedonian

Speakers

About 1.7 million people speak Macedonian as a first language (2022 figure).1

Did you know?

Macedonian has three definite articles that show distance from the speaker: a neutral one (-от, -та, -то), one for things close by (-ов, -ва, -во) and one for things further away (-он, -на, -но), all attached to the end of the word.1

The main challenge

Unlike most Slavic languages, Macedonian nouns have no case endings (apart from the vocative), so the effort goes into the verb instead: its many tenses and the distinction between events the speaker witnessed and events they only report.1

About the Macedonian language

Language familyIndo-European → Balto-Slavic → Slavic → South Slavic (Eastern South Slavic)1
SpeakersAbout 1.7 million native speakers (2022). Published estimates of the total number of speakers range widely, from 1.4 to 3.5 million.1
Primary scriptMacedonian Cyrillic alphabet of 31 letters, with a phonemic spelling: one letter for each sound2
Word order & typologySVO with flexible order. Markedly analytic for a Slavic language: noun cases have been lost (only vocative traces remain), there is no infinitive, and definiteness is a suffixed article in three forms: -от (general), -ов (near the speaker) and -он (farther away).1,3
Official statusOfficial language of North Macedonia. Recognised as a minority language in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia, and locally official in parts of Albania and Serbia.1

Macedonian reading proficiency benchmarks (CEFR & TEMAK)

TEMAK, the test of Macedonian as a foreign language run by CETIS MAK at the Blaže Koneski Faculty of Philology in Skopje, has basic, intermediate and advanced levels that the centre says correspond closely to A1, B1 and C1. Treat these as approximate matches, not an official equivalence.

Reference corpora

Large Macedonian corpora are recent and built mainly from the web.1,2

  • MaCoCu-mk: Version 2.0 (2023) holds about 524 million words in roughly 1.96 million texts crawled from the .mk and .мкд domains in 2021, cleaned of boilerplate and near-duplicates, and released under CC0.1
  • CLASSLA-web.mk: A 560-million-token web corpus described by CLARIN.SI as the first linguistically annotated general corpus of Macedonian, part of the South Slavic CLASSLA-web collection by Ljubešić and Kuzman (2024).2,3
  • Register: Stichos writes standard literary Macedonian, the norm based on the central dialects of Veles, Prilep and Bitola, and avoids regionalisms and loanwords from neighbouring languages.

Readability design principles

  • Formulas: We have not found a readability formula calibrated for Macedonian. Because the spelling is phonemic, a learner who knows the 31 letters can sound out almost any word, and the harder steps lie in vocabulary and grammar rather than decoding.1
  • Stichos: Stichos sets difficulty with level-by-level grammar rules and sentence-length limits. A0 allows no conjunctions; later levels unlock them in a fixed order, from и, или and но to ако, дека, зошто and иако.

Script & grammar scaffolding

  • Tenses: A0 uses only the present (сегашно време) and the copula сум. A1 adds the future with ќе and simple да-constructions in place of an infinitive (сакам да пијам). The aorist and imperfect arrive at A2, the l-form perfect (минато неопределено време) at B1, and the past perfect and the conditional with би at B2.
  • Articles and clitic doubling: The A0 rules leave out clitic doubling. From A1 a definite direct object takes both its article and a matching clitic before the verb, as in Ја гледам книгата (“I see the book”).
  • Clauses and non-finite forms: Relative clauses with кој and што and the reflexive passive with се open at B1. Verbal adverbs in -јќи wait until B2, and има-perfects such as има направено are first listed at C1.
  • Address: Informal ти is used for friends, family and children, and formal Вие with plural verb agreement for strangers and professional settings. Subject pronouns are dropped unless needed for emphasis or contrast.

Frequently asked questions

What writing system does Macedonian use?
Macedonian Cyrillic alphabet of 31 letters, with a phonemic spelling: one letter for each sound
Is Stichos suitable for complete beginners with zero prior knowledge (A0)?
Yes. A0 is a primary focus, designed for readers with no prior knowledge. A1 then adds basic everyday vocabulary and simple connected clauses as your foundation grows.
Are Stichos levels the same as CEFR levels?
Not exactly. Stichos levels use the familiar CEFR names, from A0 to B2, and are modelled on the CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference), so a Stichos B1 is meant to feel close to a B1 in your course book. They aren't an official CEFR rating, and different books and exams draw the lines in slightly different places. A0 is Stichos's own addition, just below the framework's first level.
Are the stories written by AI, and how accurate are they?
Yes. Stories are generated by AI and then checked by further automated steps against the grammar and vocabulary rules for your level. That catches most problems, but it isn't a human editor, so an occasional unnatural phrase or slip can get through. Treat Stichos as practice material, and check anything you're unsure of with a teacher or a reference.
Can I read stories with explanations in my native language?
Yes. Stichos allows you to pair any target language with any native support language. You can read a Croatian story with French glosses, or a German story with Spanish explanations.
How does word lookup work while reading?
Tap or click any word for its meaning in that sentence, explained in your own language. In the full version, you can save any word to your Vocab Bank for later review.
Is the preview free, and what happens to my email?
Yes. The preview is free and needs no account. If you join the Reading List, we use your email to send your 3 free sample stories (PDF, after you confirm your address) and to let you know when we fully open. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle it.
Do stories include audio or narration?
Story narration isn't part of the preview. At launch, the Premium Audio add-on reads every story aloud in a natural-sounding AI voice, in 39 of our 40 languages (Esperanto doesn't have audio support yet).
