Key linguistic features of the Macedonian language
Speakers
About 1.7 million people speak Macedonian as a first language (2022 figure).1
Did you know?
Macedonian has three definite articles that show distance from the speaker: a neutral one (-от, -та, -то), one for things close by (-ов, -ва, -во) and one for things further away (-он, -на, -но), all attached to the end of the word.1
The main challenge
Unlike most Slavic languages, Macedonian nouns have no case endings (apart from the vocative), so the effort goes into the verb instead: its many tenses and the distinction between events the speaker witnessed and events they only report.1
CEFR exams
Where students struggle
- Clitic doubling: a definite object is repeated by a short pronoun before the verb, as in Јас не му ја дадов книгата на момчето (I did not give the book to the boy), which learners tend to leave out.1
Teaching notes
- Teach the stress rule on day one: stress falls on the third-from-last syllable in words of three or more syllables, and on the first syllable in shorter words, so learners can say most new words straight from the page.1
